Abstract
Hereditary elliptocytosis has been known to be a rare disease, especially in oriental
people. The autosomal dominent condition probably includes more than one genetic
varient.
Elliptocytes are abundant in peripheral blood film, numbering over 25%, whereas in
normal people less than 15% of the red cells are elliptical. Most person with the
common form of HE are non-anemic; a minority of this group have mild hemolysis.
Recently authors experienced four cases of HE in a family. The peripheral blood
smears examined show about 50%¡80% of elliptocytes in all without signs of anemia
and hemolytic evidence. This report is the seventh familial case since 1966 in Korea.
